Sunday 28 June

Jesus asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’

They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah;

and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’

‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’

Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.'

Matthew 16:13-16

  • Who did people think Jesus was in Matthew 16:13-16?

John the Baptist, Elijah and Jeremiah were all prophets. Lots of people thought Jesus was another good teacher, just as many people do today. But Peter realised Jesus was something more

  • Any idea what the word "Messiah" means?

Messiah means God's chosen King.

Can you draw a picture of what kings normally look like?

A king usually has a crown, a throne and a palace. Jesus was different. Instead of everyone serving him, he had come to serve everyone else. Jesus was not the sort of king people were expecting.

People see different things when they look at Jesus. What do you see when you look at this picture?

Some people see an old lady, some people see a young lady. Can you see them both?

People saw different things when they looked at Jesus.

  • What do your friends think about Jesus?

  • Who do you think Jesus is?

  • Why do you think that?

The only crown Jesus put on was a crown of thorns. God's King chose to be captured and killed -  because he loves you.

Now that's the sort of King worth following!
