Sunday 13th June

God made the heavens and the earth

We are looking at the same Bible passage as last week.

Genesis 1:1-25

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth...."

In Genesis 1 we see what God is like. An incredibly powerful God who made everything we see around us from nothing.

  • a God who turns darkness into light

  • a God who turns mess into order

  • a God who turns emptiness into fullness

God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures' (v20) - God wants this world to be jam packed full of life!

7 times in this chapter, God says his creation is "good" or "very good" - that means he enjoys it. That is the whole point of creation: to bring God joy, delight and pleasure. That is the whole reason we exist.

Is that your no.1 aim in life: to please God?

How have you been this week at pleasing him?

If God delights in his creation:

  • how should we treat animals, including our pets?

  • how should we treat the environment?

  • what should we think when we see a beautiful sunset or gorgeous flower?

If God made the entire universe with its 100 billion galaxies, how big is he? Why should that make us feel safe if he holds us in his hands?

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank you for all the life we see around us. We praise you that it all came from you. We know that creation is made to bring you joy, so help us want to please you more than we please ourselves. Help us also to take great comfort when we feel sad or worried from knowing how big and powerful you are, and that you hold us in your hands. In Jesus name, Amen.
